Despite the completion of direct support from RESPOND, Street Smart model targeted at Most-At-Risk-Adolescents introduced earlier under the RESPOND Project, continues to be implemented and a number of partners have expressed an interest in adopting the model.
The Street Smart intervention is a multi-session, skills-building program to help youth practice safer sexual behaviors and reduce substance use. Earlier this year, RESPOND transferred the piloted and adopted to Ukrainian context methodology to the Ukrainian League of Social Workers to be integrated within public centers of social services for families and youth.
At the request from the HIV/AIDS Alliance, on October 10-12, RESPOND trained 21 representatives of Ukrainian HIV-service NGOs from seven regions of Ukraine in implementation of the Street Smart intervention. The trained staff will integrate Street Smart core elements into the harm reduction services for MARA under a program of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine funded by Elton John Foundation.
On November 18-20, 2015, RESPOND and its local partner organizations participated in the International Conference “Effective approaches to working with adolescents with substance use experience” held in Kyiv by International Charitable Foundation AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW-Ukraine) where RESPOND presented Street Smart methodology and facilitated a skills lab to demonstrate tools offered by this intervention.
An electronic version of the Street Smart implementation manual is available on project website in the resources section.
